1997 saw the birth of the Singapore Cup, known in 1997 as the Singapore League Cup. 1998 would see the competition renamed the Singapore Cup and another tournament launched as the Singapore League Cup.

This first edition of the compeititon would feature nine teams drawn into three groups of three teams playing on an home and away basis. The group winners and best runner up would qualify for the semi finals.

SAFFC would win the championship defeating Geylang United 1:0 in the final.
