A Different Kind of Blue

A Different Kind of Blue

Miles Davis' performance at the British Isle of Wight Festival on August 29, 1970 was caught on film and is presented in Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue. This DVD presents interview clips from a range of those involved, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, , as well as musicians who were in Miles' musical orbit at the time such as Carlos Santana. The crowning glory of this package though is the performance in full. If Bitches Brew set down the template for a more dense, rock/funk flavoured Miles, then the group that followed Gary Bartz - Sax, Dave Holland - Bass Guitar, Jack DeJohnette - Drums , Airto Moreira - Percussion, Chick Corea - Fender Rhondes and Keith Jarrett - Oragan took this music a whole stage further. To the jazz audience of 1970 this seemed dense and, at times chaotic. Miles continued to do what he had always done, which was to press ahead to the ultimate limits of any musical direction he chose to follow. His playing on the modal flavoured jazz of Kind of Blue was sparce and considered whereas here he has to cut through a much denser setting.

This DVD was, for a long time, the only legitimately available recording of Miles' full Isle of Wight set. This is now available on CD on Bitches Brew Live.
