Dobele State gymnasium (Dobeles Valsts ģimnāzija), Latvia

In January 7, 1921, Dobele city council, supported by Ministry of Education, decided to open the high school. One year later in March 15th 1922, the school was established in the name of Dobele city gymnasium. The first class began with 17 students -10 girls and 7 boys. The school became a cultural sanctuary throughout the county. In September 26th, 2003, Dobele city gymnasium was granted the status change from ‘’Dobele city gymnasium” to‘’ Dobele State gymnasium’’ (Dobeles Valsts ģimnāzija or DVG) by the Latvian president Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga.

Dobele city gymnasium has collaborated with several institutions abroad. In Autumn 2001, students were offered to the commerce program, implemented by the Latvian Academy of Business and Management, as well as the economics educational organization.

The school has participated in the AFS inter-cultural program and Dobele State gymnasium students have studied abroad in many countries around the world like Denmark ,USA, Scotland and Puerto Rico. Dobele State gymnasium has also received exchange students from Australia, USA, Germany, Austria, Thailand, Brazil and France.

In 2006-2007, school began the Project, which was to highlight teacher’s educational process. This Project was initiated by teacher L.Čebaņenko. She brought up 2 classes of 10th grade students within 1 year. Firstly this initiative was supported by the EU, but after 2 years it was carried out by Dobele city council. In the same year, the school was one of 50 schools in Latvia, which were approved at science courses, with the emphasis on student’s researching and activities in the learning process.

So far students have participated in competitions and they have received awards, not only in the district, county or republic competitions but also in world competitions.
