Henri de Bernières

Henri de Bernières

Henri de Bernières (c. 1635 – 1700) was born in Normandy and raised from age nine by his uncle in a religious atmosphere.

De Bernières trained as a priest and was chosen as one of a group to accompany François de Laval, the first Roman Catholic bishop of New France, to the new colony in 1659. He was the bishop’s chaplain and was ordained as a priest in 1660. Shortly after, he took over the pastoral duties for Quebec and, when it became a parish in 1664, he became the first parish priest.

His career continued with his becoming vicar general of the diocese and first superior of the seminary of Quebec.
