Bhupathiraju
Bhupathiraju is a popular surname among Rajus of Kshatriyas in Andhra Pradesh . Bhupathirajus are descendants of Kota Kings who ruled Dharanikota, from around 8th century AD to the mid 12th century AD. History reveals that Kota kings are migrants among few Kshatriyas of Kota, Rajasthan.
Their Gotra is Dhananjaya, as King Dhananjaya, who ruled Madhyadesa, is believed to be their ancestor. Bhupathrajus belong to Suryavansha (also called Ikshavaku) dynasty. There are historical evidences that some Rajput groups have migrated from Rajasthan state due to political conflicts, famine etc. during medieval period, and have settled in coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh by altering their last name to Raju, instead of Rajput.
Today Bhupathirajus are mostly found in some villages like Kumudavalli of West Godavari district, and sparsely in Hyderabad and United States . Many historical records reveal that Bhupathirajus have ruled the region of Golconda for a small period, before the invasion of Muslims. Bhupathiraju is one of the 109 surnames of Andhra Kshatriyas. Because of Muslim and foreign invasions, Kshatriya dynasties in India came to an end by 13th century.
