Basra Governorate (Arabic: البصرة Al Baṣra) is a governorate in southern Iraq bordering Kuwait to the south and Iran to the east. The provincial capital is Basra city. Other districts of Basra include Al-Qurnah, Az Zubayr, , Shatt Al Arab, Abu Al Khaseeb and Al Faw located on the Persian Gulf.

Post World War I
In 1920, after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, the United Kingdom took over the former Ottoman vilayets of Basra, Baghdad and Mosul and called it the British Mandate of Mesopotamia. The mandate was succeeded by the Kingdom of Iraq in 1932.
Post 2003 Invasion of Iraq
On the 9 December 2007, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced that control of Al-Basrah Governorate would be handed over from Coalition forces to local Iraqi control. Control of the province was officially took place a week later, on 16 December 2007, making this the 9th such province to be relenquished to full Iraqi control.
